Meta tags are HTML codes that are inserted into the header on a web page, after the title tag. In the context of search engine optimization, when people refer to meta tags, they are usually referring to the meta description tag and the meta keywords tag.

If your building a site your self from scratch then this would be some thing you'd need to add. A lot of site's that come as a package such as Joomla or Vbulletin will have fields you fill in your self in there main admincp options.

Example of a meta tag for this site:-

Meta Description, Plsyattion3 clans the only place to get your clan noticed. (this would now appear in a search engine as what the site is after the site name)

Meta Keyword, Playstation 3 clans, ps3 clans, clans, CoD clans, BF clans. (basically listing things you would like your site to appear in in other search results doesn't work all the time but worth doing)

Joomla needs a mod to get meta tags properly.. Tip about meta tags:
Never use more than 10ish, and always choose tags close to the content of your site
Each page should have unique meta tags
Keyword density is just as important (if you select meta tags that are not reflected in the content, it will not count for squat)
Content is always king

I have said it earlier, but when it comes to SEO and clan sites, it is generally little you can do. You will compete with high profile keywords that you have no chance in hell of beating, so you better just try to stick with one. For instance my site will be the number one result when you search for hah clan on all major search engines, and I am guessing I am giving this site a boost as well, since you have an inbound link from me, and we share some keywords (and my PR is higher than yours :P )
