EA Sports have announced plans to start charging people $10 that buy pre owned games to use the online features. This will take effect with all new titles from EA Sports.
EA Sports SVP of worldwide development Andrew Wilson has said to Develop (http://www.develop-online.net/news/34788/EA-Sports-Online-charges-arent-unfair) “In order to continue to enhance the online experiences that are attracting nearly five million connected game sessions a day, we think it’s fair to get paid for the services we provide and to reserve these online services for people who pay EA to access them,”.
“We’ll continue to invest in creating great games and offer industry-leading online services to extend the game experience to everyone. I don’t think even the harshest cynic can argue with that and instead I think fans will see the value we’re committing to deliver.”
"With Online Pass everyone has access to the same premium online services and content regardless of how and where you buy the game. I've been here now for more than a decade, and the investments we're making in developing for digital are profound," he continued.
"When we see how many people are playing all of our games online, consumers are telling us that competition is endemic to sports in a way that most people don't get just by playing alone. We want to reserve EA Sports online services for people who pay EA to access them."
The investment that EA Sports makes into making these games as far as I can see isn't a lot, most of there games after there first release year on year appear to be no more than small changes.
Blitz Games Studios co-founder Andrew Oliver has come to the Aid of EA Sports saying “Arguably the bigger problem on consoles now is the trading in of games,” he tells Develop (http://www.develop-online.net/news/34791/Pre-owned-a-bigger-problem-than-piracy).
So one way these guys can solve the problem is either tell there publishers they want more money in royalties from the first release of there titles or make them cheaper so that gamers don't have to keep paying out for over priced games. We have to trade games in to get newer games!
With EA being a major factor in the gaming industry it will only be a matter of time before more follow suite.
